Free Blood Glucose Testing in Flinders

Finger-prick blood glucose test with a test strip in a handheld glucose meter

Blood glucose testing measures the amount of sugar in your blood at the time of the test. At Flinders Discount Chemist, blood glucose testing is part of our free health checks, so you can check your level in store without a doctor’s appointment.

Here’s what the test involves, who may find it useful and what to do with your result. To ask about a test, call us on (02) 4296 5548 or visit us at 7 Munmorah Circuit, Flinders NSW 2529.

Free Blood Glucose Test at Your Local Pharmacy

Our free blood glucose test uses a small drop of blood taken from your fingertip. The drop goes onto a test strip in a handheld meter, which shows a reading within a short time. It’s a quick check and there’s no cost to you.

The test is one of several free health checks available at our pharmacy, alongside free blood pressure testing.

Blood Sugar Test at the Pharmacy in Flinders

Our pharmacy is in Flinders, in the Shellharbour area, and we’re open seven days: Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, Saturday 9am to 6pm and Sunday 9am to 4pm. A blood sugar test at the pharmacy can be a convenient option if you’d like to check your level while you’re already out shopping.

Who May Find a Blood Glucose Test Useful

Blood glucose levels can rise slowly, and many people with raised levels don’t notice any symptoms at first. A check may be worth asking about if you:

  • have a family history of type 2 diabetes
  • are carrying extra weight or are not very active
  • have had high blood pressure or diabetes during pregnancy
  • have noticed you’re more thirsty than usual, passing more urine, or feeling tired

If you’re unsure whether a check is right for you, ask our team or your GP.

What to Expect

  1. Come into the pharmacy, or call ahead on (02) 4296 5548 to ask when a test can be done.
  2. A member of our team cleans your fingertip and uses a small lancet to take a drop of blood.
  3. The meter gives a reading, and we can talk you through what it means.

Your result can depend on when you last ate, so let us know if you’ve eaten recently. A pharmacy test is a snapshot, not a diagnosis. If your reading is higher or lower than expected, we may suggest you see your GP, who can arrange a laboratory blood test if needed.

Keeping Track Over Time

One reading on its own doesn’t tell the whole story. If you check your blood glucose from time to time, keep a note of the date, the time and when you last ate. That record can help you and your GP see whether your level is changing.

When to Get Help Straight Away

If someone is confused, very drowsy, unconscious or having trouble breathing, call Triple Zero (000) straight away.

If you already manage diabetes, keep following the plan you have with your doctor or diabetes educator. A pharmacy test can sit alongside that care, but it doesn’t replace it.

Do I need to fast before a blood glucose test?

Not for a quick pharmacy check, but the time since you last ate affects the reading. Telling us when you last ate helps make sense of your result. Your GP will tell you if a fasting laboratory test is needed.

Is the blood glucose test free?

Yes. Blood glucose testing is part of our free health checks. Call us on (02) 4296 5548 if you have any questions before you come in.
