Who Can a Pharmacist Vaccinate in NSW?

In NSW, trained pharmacists can give a range of vaccines without a doctor’s prescription. The age limits for the vaccines on this page are:

  • Flu vaccines: people aged 2 years and over
  • COVID-19 vaccines: people aged 5 years and over
  • dTpa (diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough) vaccine: people aged 5 years and over

Babies and younger children are vaccinated by a GP or an immunisation clinic.

Free Vaccines Under the National Immunisation Program

Some people can get vaccines for free under the National Immunisation Program (NIP). For flu vaccines in 2026, this includes:

  • Children aged 6 months to under 5 years
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over
  • Pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy
  • People aged 65 years and over
  • People aged 6 months and over with certain medical conditions

COVID-19 doses are also free for eligible groups. Our COVID-19 vaccinations page lists who is recommended a dose and how often.

Having More Than One Vaccine

Flu vaccines can be given on the same day as most other vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines. If you are due for more than one, you may be able to have them at the same appointment. Mention it in the Additional Information box when you book so we can plan your visit.

Before Your Appointment

Before giving a vaccine, the pharmacist will ask a few questions to check it is suitable for you. Let them know if you:

  • are unwell or have a fever on the day
  • have had a serious reaction to a vaccine before, or have a severe allergy
  • are pregnant or planning a pregnancy
  • have a weakened immune system or take medicines that affect it
  • have had any other vaccines in the past four weeks

After Your Vaccination

You’ll be asked to wait at the pharmacy for about 15 minutes afterwards, so the pharmacist can check you are well. Common side effects such as a sore arm, mild fever or tiredness usually settle within a day or two. If you’re worried about a reaction, call us or speak to your GP, and in an emergency call 000.

Flu and COVID-19 vaccines given at a pharmacy are recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register, so your vaccination history stays in one place. You can view your record through your Medicare online account.
